2000  2004 Presidential Election Returns  2008

President George W. Bush had been elected President in a highly contentious election in 2000. In 2001, terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon after hijacking four airplanes. Bush declared war on terrorists following the attacks. His approval rating soared. But had also invaded Iraq, a country not directly implicated in the attacks. Democrats nominated John Kerry, a Massachusetts Senator and Vietnam War Veteran, who questioned the basis for the war in Iraq, since it was not directly implicated in the attacks. Foreign policy dominated the election debates, but domestic issues like the economy, jobs, and moral values also entered the conversation. Kerry accused Bush of being incompetent in his war policy. But the voters decided this election in much the same way as 2000. Not wishing to change horses midstream, Bush narrowly defeated Kerry in the popular vote and the Electoral College. Bush therefore became the first President to lose the popular vote while winning in the Electoral College to win re-election with a win in the popular vote.
