U.S. Elections

1996  2000 Presidential Election Returns  2004

Vote 2000

President Bill Clinton was leaving office as a popular President, despite questions about his moral character. Republicans nominated Texas Governor George W. Bush, who promised to restore dignity and morality to the Oval Office. Vice-President Al Gore was nominated to succeed the President, running on keeping up the economic prosperity of the Clinton years. He charged that Bush's plan would increase the budget deficit. Bush argued that Gore's environmental policy would hurt business. Since both candidates ran to the middle of the political spectrum, some liberals abandoned Gore and voted for third party candidate Ralph Nader. Despite the popularity of Bill Clinton, Gore narrowly won the popular vote. But the election would hinge on who won the electoral votes in the state of Florida.

Bush led the election night count in Florida, prompting calls for a recount from the Gore campaign. The vote was certified under Florida law one week later. But the Florida Supreme Court called for the recounts to continue. When the vote was certified again, George W. Bush led by only 537 votes out of over 5.8 million cast for Bush and Gore. The Gore campaign continued to call for recounts and got their wish. The Bush campaign called on the U.S. Supreme Court to halt the recounts because the state standards were not the same for counting each vote throughout the state. Due to that reality and the looming deadline for deciding the electors, the U.S. Supreme Court halted the recounts, giving Bush the State of Florida and the election 36 days after the vote.
