President Herbert Hoover had been
elected in 1928 on the promise of expanding economic prosperity in
the United States. The Great Depression had ruined that promise and
the dreams of many Americans. The Republicans believed that the
policies of Hoover would alleviate the Depression, but it had not
worked. President Hoover was renominated by the Republican Party, as
they did not want to admit that Hoover had anything to do with the
Depression. He also was not ready to defend his own record of
governance. New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt promised a New
Deal for Americans that would help to aid economic recovery. He
chose Southerner and House Speaker John Garner as his running mate
and the Democratic Party nominated and rallied around Roosevelt.
Despite being in a wheelchair due to childhood Polio, Roosevelt ran
an energetic campaign. Hoover did not
have the support of many Republicans, some of which even expressed
support for Roosevelt. Hoover argued that government intervention
would make the depression worse. But Hoover was defeated in a landslide.
