Election Night 2008

1924  1928 Presidential Election Returns  1932

Vote 1928

President Calvin Coolidge declined to run for re-election in 1928. The Republicans chose Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover to succeed him. His support mainly came from women, immigrants, and progressives. He campaigned on banishing poverty in America. The Democrats chose New York Governor Al Smith as their candidate. Both were widely known and respected leaders going into the campaign. Voters did have some concerns with Smith. He was Roman Catholic. Some Republicans (without Hoover's permission) distributed pamphlets saying Smith would be a servant of the Pope and not America. Many Protestants believed what they read. Smith was also against Prohibition. He was also viewed as a part of some of the corruption known to exist in his state of New York. Meanwhile, the Republicans were credited with the booming economy of the 1920s and made a good case for staying the course. Hoover promised to expand the economy even further.  He was elected in a solid margin in the election. But trouble lay just one year ahead, as the Great Depression would take the country by surprise.
