President Franklin Roosevelt was
campaigning for a second term, after winning handily over Herbert
Hoover in the 1932 election. The New Deal was being established
after eight years of the Great Depression. The New Deal turned out
to be amazingly popular with the American public, so Roosevelt was
not seriously threatened in his re-election. He was able to portray
himself as the candidate for the common person. Farmers, workers,
and the unemployed people were behind Roosevelt. African-Americans
voted with Democrats for the first time since the Civil War. The Republicans
nominated Kansas Governor Alf Landon, who hardly campaigned for the
office. Landon did not oppose much of the New Deal, but did believe
it was not accepting of business interests and was full of wasteful
spending. He also believed that it undermined the individuality and
productivity of people. He did accuse Roosevelt
of corruption late in the campaign, but the deal was already sealed.
Roosevelt won in a huge electoral landslide!
