President Ulysses S. Grant was accused of corruption by the
Democrats. One scandal caused Grant to drop his Vice President from
the ticket. Democrats, along with Liberal
Republicans, were demanding the end of Southern Reconstruction. The Liberal
Republicans and the Democrats nominated the same person to
oppose Grant. Horace Greeley was their choice. But Greeley did not
excite his own party, and his history as a newspaper reporter
gave his opponents fodder for attack. Grant continued to run on
keeping the union together and reminded voters of his success as a
Civil War general. His scandals largely did not come to light until
after the election. He outspent Greeley and won re-election. Horace
Greeley died shortly after the election, and it was before the vote
of the Electoral College. Most of Greeley's votes went to other
Democrats, and three votes for Greeley were thrown out because of
his death. The votes for Grant in Arkansas and Louisiana were thrown
out due to irregularities. Grant still won the election easily!
The votes from Greeley's electors were as follows: Thomas Hendricks
(42), Benjamin Brown (18), Horace Greeley (3), Charles Jenkins (2),
and David Davis (1).
