President Andrew Johnson succeeded Lincoln after Lincoln's
assassination. Johnson had been impeached by Congress, although
the Senate did not convict him. However, he became ineffective as
President, and he was not renominated for re-election. The Civil War had
just ended and the South was going through a period of
Reconstruction, and it was the main issue of the campaign. Some
southern states did not vote because they were under Reconstruction.
The Democrats nominated Horatio Seymour to succeed Johnson and
Republicans nominated war hero Ulysses S. Grant. Grant's campaign
slogan was "Let Us Have Peace." Grant argued for a
longer period of reconstruction than the Democrats, but his message
of peace was good news to a country weary of war. Seymour gave
Grant a closer race in the popular vote, but the electoral vote was
a large victory for the Republican.
