President Abraham Lincoln had been prosecuting the war with the
South during his term. Initially, he was not well received. But by
1863 and 1864, his popularity increased. Lincoln also nominated a
Southern Democrat named Andrew Johnson to be his Vice-President to
show a sign of commitment to national union. Some Democrats even
joined with the Republicans to form a National Union Party. Despite
being Southern states which had seceded from the union, electors were chosen in Tennessee and
Louisiana, but their votes were not counted. Lincoln had the great
support of the soldiers in the war, and his opponent, Democrat
George McClellan, was unable to gain traction campaigning on a swift
and peaceful end to the Civil War. McClellan wanted a negotiated
peace treaty with the South. Lincoln had fired McClellan in 1862 as
a general. He also campaigned against the
emancipation of Southern slaves. Lincoln was easily re-elected, but
only after a series of Union victories, including General Sherman's
march across Georgia, made it possible.
