1824  1828 Presidential Election Returns  1832

Vote 1828

President John Quincy Adams had been elected by the House of Representatives despite losing the popular vote in 1824. He had presided over his term with that dark cloud hanging over his head. He had now become the head of the National Republican Party, which had split from the Democratic-Republican Party. The Democratic-Republican Party now called themselves the Democratic Party. Democrat Andrew Jackson was nominated to oppose President Adams again. His campaign began the day he lost the election in 1824. The hope of his supporters was to set right what they saw as the improper result of that election. This time, Jackson was able to consolidate the support of other leading candidates from 1824. The Tariff of 1828, signed by Adams, was unpopular in the West and South, and Jackson was able to win the votes of the people there. The campaign was nasty, with attacks against the character of the candidates being a common occurrence. Adams distributed handbills accusing Jackson of executing soldiers for minor offenses in the War of 1812. Adams also portrayed Jackson as a crude and uneducated man who was ready for a fight. But people on the frontier found these traits to be exciting and called Jackson "Old Hickory," because he was seen as being as tough as hickory wood. He campaigned as a common man against the elitists on the coast. But in the end, Jackson defeated the incumbent Adams to win the Presidency.
