Vote 1824

House Vote 1824

The election of 1824 was an interesting one to be sure! The Democratic-Republican Party had won six straight elections. But this time, they failed to nominate a single national candidate. This resulted in four candidates from the same party running against one another. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts and Kentuckian Speaker of the House Henry Clay, who would later form the National Republican Party, ran. Secretary of the Treasury William Crawford of Georgia ran as a candidate. He was the early front-runner, but a stroke set back his campaign. Tennessean General Andrew Jackson, the future candidate of the Democratic Party also ran. Jackson was the hero of the Battle of New Orleans. The Panic of 1819 had affected rural and urban workers alike. The Missouri Compromise was also a major issue affecting how the nation would move forward on slavery. In the end, Jackson won a plurality of the popular vote, which for the first time was how the majority of electors were selected. But he failed to win a majority of electors. Under the Twelfth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, this meant that the U.S. House of Representatives had to choose a winner from the top three electoral vote winners, making it a choice between Jackson, Adams, and Crawford. Henry Clay, the fourth place winner, hated Jackson and threw his support behind Adams. Adams was elected in state delegations by the House of Representatives. Since Adams later decided to make Henry Clay his Secretary of State, this plan was called a "corrupt bargain" by supporters of Jackson.
