President
Andrew Jackson was running for a second term. In 1832, both major
parties decided for the first time to hold nominating conventions to
choose their candidates. The Democrats chose Andrew Jackson, and
replaced Vice-President Calhoun with Martin Van Buren. The National
Republicans chose Henry Clay. Clay accused Jackson of being a tyrant
who granted favors to himself and others. The major issues that
dominated the election were the Second Bank of the United States and
President Jackson's personality. Jackson did not like the bank and
ended its charter. He also withdrew all federal funds from the bank.
Jackson campaigned with fervor on the idea that he was campaigning
for the common person against the elitist interests of those in
power. Clay argued that closing the bank hurt borrowers of smaller
amounts of money. While Jackson campaigned with Vice-Presidential
candidate Martin Van Buren, some Democrats chose a different
Vice-Presidential candidate, and this ticket was on the ballot in
several states. The Anti-Masonic Party, which opposed the Masons and
secret societies, essentially opposed Jackson and nominated William
Wirt. South Carolina's legislature chose Virginian John Floyd, who
supported the concept of nullification, to receive its electoral
votes. In the end, Jackson won a comfortable victory.
