1812  1816 Presidential Election Returns  1820

Vote 1816

James Madison was not seeking re-election in the 1816 Presidential election. Secretary of State James Monroe was narrowly nominated to succeed him on the Democratic-Republican ticket. The War of 1812 was the pressing issue. Even though the United States had not definitively won the War of 1812, the peace that ensued was enough to reassure the American people. At the same time, the Federalist Party was struggling to keep itself together. They had been against the war and had even threatened to secede from the union in a meeting called the Hartford Convention. Rufus King was nominated by the Federalists, but the national patriotism that followed the war of 1812 was a strong factor. Federalists, because of their threats to secede, were now seen as unpatriotic. With these factors combining to undermine Federalist strength, James Monroe was easily elected President of the United States.
