President James Madison was seeking re-election in the 1816 Presidential election as the War of 1812 was being fought. Madison's war policy was the primary issue. Democratic-Republican candidate New York City Mayor DeWitt Clinton decided to oppose Madison. Clinton was the nephew of the late former New York Governor George Clinton. The Federalists chose not to nominate their own candidate, but instead decided to support Clinton in an effort to oust Madison. This was not their official position, however. One part of the Federalist Party decided to nominate Rufus King for President. But he only made the ballot in Virginia. Madison struggled due to a controversial war policy. But DeWitt Clinton had a nasty habit of promising different things to different groups of people. Clinton campaigned in the favor of the war in the South, but against it in the Northeast. He tried to curry favor from different ends of the country. Skepticism by the public over war policy was the only issue that gave Clinton a chance. But in the end, Clinton lost the election. Even though they did not really run a candidate, it was the best showing for the Federalists in years.
