President Thomas Jefferson was retiring in 1808 and the race was on
to succeed him. The incumbent Democratic-Republican party nominated
Secretary of State James Madison to succeed Jefferson because
Jefferson supported Madison. This was not
without difficulty. George Clinton and James Monroe both challenged
Madison for the nomination. Clinton would go on to receive a few
electoral votes in the general election, as they were selected by
the New York legislature. The Federalists supported Charles Pinckney
for President. The Embargo Act of 1807 was a big issue for the
Federalists, who felt that the act hurt merchants in New England.
The act prevented U.S. ships from going to other countries and
halted most trade. Jefferson was still popular with the American people, however. This
helped Madison and the incumbent party to remain in charge. The
Federalists did improve their standing from 1804, however.
