President George Washington was running unopposed, although he was
reluctant to run again due to attacks he received from the press.
James Madison convinced him to run again. In the original
electoral college system, all electors voted for two candidates for
President. The candidate with the most votes became President while
the candidate with the second highest number of electoral votes
became Vice-President. President Washington received the unanimous
decision and received a vote from all electors. Vice-President John
Adams was re-elected to his post, receiving the second highest total
of votes.
George Clinton was his main competitor. He had planned to stay on as
Governor of New York and serve as Vice-President.
Federalist electors received 28,300 votes (99%) and
Anti-Federalist electors received 1,097 votes (1%), totaling
29,397 votes. All electors voted unanimously for George Washington
to be re-elected President. The table below shows Washington as the
winner of every state for this reason.
