General
George Washington was an incredibly popular figure because of his
involvement in the American Revolution. The Executive Branch of the
United States needed an executive. The Articles of Confederation
(the original government documents of the United States) had not
functioned well. So a new Constitution was drafted. There were people called
Federalists who supported the new Constitution and Anti-Federalists,
who did not support its ratification by the states. The electors of
the first Electoral College voted unanimously for George Washington,
despite the fact, and maybe in part because, Washington didn't want
the job.
The race for Vice-President was more contested, with John Adams
eventually receiving the support of the plurality of the second vote
of the electors. Only
ten states participated, as North Carolina and Rhode Island had not
yet ratified the Constitution. New York's legislature failed to
decide on its electors and thus did not participate.
All electors voted unanimously for George Washington to be
elected President. The table below shows Washington as the winner
of every state for this reason.
