In 1952, President Harry Truman
decided not to seek re-election after poor showings in early
primaries. He would later throw his support behind former Illinois
Governor Adlai E. Stevenson for the Democratic ticket. Stevenson was
nominated as the Democratic Party Candidate. He was well educated,
but was dismissed as too intellectual. Foreign
policy was the major issue of the election campaign, as the Cold War
with Russia was in full swing. The nation was at odds over the
Korean Conflict as well. The Republicans nominated General Dwight
Eisenhower to carry the banner for their party and campaign on
foreign policy issues. They accused the Democrats of being soft on
Communism and campaigned with noted anticommunist Richard Nixon. Eisenhower proceeded to successfully run
against the unpopularity of Harry Truman, winning in a major
landslide. He also promised to personally find a way to get peace in
Korea. This election marked the first time in 24 years the Republican
Party won a Presidential election.
