Election Night 2008

1896  1900 Presidential Election Returns  1904

Vote 1900

President William McKinley decided to seek a second term in 1900, and the race turned into a rematch of the previous Presidential election. Republicans renominated McKinley, and replaced his Vice-President, who had died. The choice was Theodore Roosevelt. Democrats again nominated William Jennings Bryan to run against McKinley. McKinley rode the strengths of the victories in the Spanish-American war and the upturn in the economy. The Klondike Gold Rush played a big part in this prosperity. Bryan ran against what he saw as American imperialism, which he believed McKinley had done by keeping the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. He also campaigned for Free Silver, which advocated for inflation of the monetary supply through silver rather than deflating it through gold. This position had the effect of angering some Democrats, and this proved detrimental to his campaign. In the end, McKinley won the election, convincing voters that the prosperity in the economy and the successes overseas warranted another term for McKinley. He rode to victory on the slogan "Four Years more of the Full Dinner Pail!"
