President Grover Cleveland was running for a second term in 1888.
The Republicans chose Indiana Senator Benjamin Harrison, a grandson
of former President William Henry Harrison, to oppose
him. The main issue of the election cycle was the tariff policy of
the United States. Harrison wanted to support those who worked in
factories and in industrial settings by keeping Tariffs high.
Cleveland did not support high tariffs, as he felt that they were
not fair to those who consumed products. Both candidates favored
lower taxes, a larger Navy, and new Western States. Cleveland had also angered
some people because of his opposition to pensions for Civil War
veterans. In the end, Harrison won the election in the Electoral
College, though Cleveland won the popular vote. The states of
Indiana and New York both narrowly supported Harrison, giving him
the necessary electoral votes to win. Cleveland's enemies in
the Tammany Hall political machine were able to give the state to
Harrison.
