President Donald Trump entered the 2020 Presidential election as a controversial President. President Trump touted his success in boosting the economy. Trump emphasized the idea that the economy affected ethnic minorities in a favorable way. The Democrats nominated former Vice-President Joe Biden to lead the Democrats into 2020. During Trump's term, the Democrats pounced on an investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller claiming that Russia helped Trump beat Clinton in 2016. Later, Democrats claimed President Trump denied aid to the Ukraine in exchange for investigations into the Biden family, whom he accused of corruption. Democrats in Congress impeached the President in December 2019. Republicans defended Donald Trump, who was eventually acquitted by the Senate. Then the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak upended the election year. The economy took a nosedive as the country essentially shut down in order to prevent further spread of the disease. Democrats blamed Trump for not being on top of the pandemic sooner. Trump and Republicans countered by pointing out that Democrats were not always serious about the pandemic either. Biden chose California Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate in August. Serious racial unrest enveloped the country in the summer when several killings of black men were reported in several parts of the country. Democrats argued for a change in policing policy, supporting the "Black Lives Matter" movement and arguing that America had a history of systemic racism. Republicans argued that reform was needed, but that America was by and large a good country with rough edges. In the end, Joe Biden won a narrow victory in the popular vote and the Electoral College. On January 6, 2021, when Congress met to certify the Electoral College results, supporters of Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol and temporarily shut down the proceedings seeking to challenge the Electoral College results on the grounds of alleged voter fraud. Democrats accused President Trump of inciting the riots and impeached him again on January 13. But the U.S. Senate was not able to finish a trial prior to President Trump's departure from office on January 20.
