1988  1992 Presidential Election Returns  1996

President George Bush had led the country through the Gulf War, in which Iraq was soundly defeated by a number of countries and led by the United States. At one point, his approval rating had soared near 90 percent. But one year later, the economy of the United States was in trouble. People were hurting for jobs. Further, it seemed to voters that President Bush was out of touch with ordinary Americans. The Democrats nominated Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, whose economic message appealed to people who were hungry for change. In fact, "change" was the buzzword of his campaign. He campaigned as a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. Clinton also represented a fresh and youthful presence to the Oval Office. Third Party candidate Ross Perot, a Texas Billionaire, ran for office campaigning primarily on the issue of the budget deficit. Some people saw him as weird, but others saw a serious candidate who explained his positions with graphs and pie charts. Perot also touted his business experience. In the end, Clinton won in an electoral college landslide, but without a majority of the popular vote.
